In 2019 and early 2020, I wrote an original score for Touch Code, a dance piece created by choreographer Jennifer Glaws and Jagged Moves Dance Company: https://jenniferglaws.org/jagged-moves. The piece, which includes a live performance of the score onstage, was set to premiere in March 2020 with several shows. We got to present one, on March 12, before the rest were cancelled due to Covid-19. Created collaboratively by Glaws and an all-female dance sextet, the piece explores the tensions and power dynamics at play when people claim personal boundaries and make space for themselves. In light of the physical restrictions of social distancing, these themes have since taken on a new resonance, which I’ve explored in this version of “Opening and Suffocation,” a section of music from the beginning of the show. Using distortion, delay, and looping, I’m working to express the repression of emotions—both positive and negative—that can occur when we resist human touch, and the freedom we sometimes experience when that control is released. Touch Code is scheduled to remount in the fall of 2021 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.

Upon purchase, you can download a PDF that contains a Vimeo link to the show.
