We start by hearing each instrument alone. Each partner in the duet shyly takes turns playing with the melody. This trade continues throughout the piece, but the slow, rubato beginning transitions into a quick Irish reel and the players end together on an octave. This tune is also known under the hot and cold titles, respectively, of “Courting Them All” and “Don’t Bother Me,” as well as the ominous “John Grady’s Downfall.”
